MATERIALITY: SILVER
Silver, one of nature's most captivating and enduring gifts, has long intrigued Bodo Sperlein. His fascination with the material goes beyond its aesthetic beauty—he delves deep into the historic techniques and craftsmanship that have shaped its use over millennia. For Bodo, silver represents not just tradition, but a canvas for innovation, offering endless possibilities for modern interpretation.
“I believe it’s my responsibility as a designer to preserve techniques that have evolved over thousands of years,” Bodo explains in an interview with Hole & Corner magazine. “It’s a great privilege to carry that legacy forward, yet it’s also crucial to combine traditional methods with new techniques to reimagine the material. I’m not against modern methods, but I am deeply drawn to the rich history of natural materials and their craftsmanship.”
Bodo’s design philosophy revolves around pushing the boundaries of tradition while respecting the heritage of materials like precious metals, stone, and wood. When the studio began exploring silver, it was with a commitment to understanding its historical significance and unique properties. From its antibacterial qualities (once used for water purification) to its remarkable durability, resistance to corrosion, and malleability, silver proved to be the ideal material for Bodo’s vision.
Between 2014 and 2016, Bodo acted as Creative and Strategic Consultant for Tane, a prestigious Mexican silverware brand known for its extraordinary craftsmanship. This experience deepened his understanding of silver and solidified his vision for integrating it into contemporary design. Through his Tane collection, Bodo revitalised the use of silver, merging it with other natural materials like wood and volcanic stone. Pieces such as the Symmetry salt and pepper mills, Atlas plate, and Ravine bowl became a dialogue between the timeless beauty of silver and the evolving world of modern design, celebrating Mexico’s long-standing relationship with the material.
Bodo's collaboration with Jarosinski & Vaugoin, one of Austria’s oldest silver manufacturers, further strengthened his connection to silver’s heritage. The brand, established in 1847 in Vienna, partnered with Bodo to create Onda, a sculptural table piece made of sterling silver and fine glass. With Onda, silver was reintroduced as a medium for contemporary design lovers—an elegant art piece that bridges past and present with fluidity and grace. The piece embodies Bodo’s philosophy: elegance, timeless beauty, and a perfect balance of the old and the new.
In a world that moves faster every day, silver remains a constant—its purity, lustrous shine, and versatility make it the ideal material for Bodo Sperlein's vision of timeless design. Through his work, Bodo ensures that silver continues to evolve, connecting the past with the future while speaking to the elegance of the present moment.
